Facebook Hilarity

Sometimes I wonder why I try...
excerpt from recent Facebook activity...

Status Change:
Ray is looking at some fascists on toilet paper and thinking that a dirty ass is still too good a place for Sean Hannity.

How about some Pelosi paper, refusing to allow the public to see the stimulus sounds pretty fascist to me...

Ray at 11:41am February 13
Woah....supporters of Bush have ceded their right to criticize government transparency!

Regardless, how is simply "refusing to allow the public to see the stimulus," in and of itself, and act of fascism? A lack of transparency in government certainly isn't unique to fascism. So, what's the underlying purpose that makes it fascist?

Are you maybe suggesting that she and the Dems are deliberately hiding some backroom deals that benefit corporate America and the power elite? You know, those same corporations and wealthy people that Republicans criticize that socialist Pelosi for trying to regulate? If that's the case, how can she be a socialist and a fascist at the same time? You need to enlighten me on how that's possible, Josh.

Joshua at 4:33pm February 13
That makes as much sense as calling Hannity a fascist... so relax Ray. And despite the fact that I was not a Bush supporter in regards to his horrendous fiscal policy, I will always maintain my right to criticize government transparency regardless of who I may have 'supported'. Oh and socialism and fascism are not mutually exclusive... so I think you can answer your own question.

Ray at 5:23pm February 13
HaHaHa...that's some funny stuff right there. I'd love to read your definition of fascism to better understand how polar ideologies like socialism and fascism can be anything other than mutually exclusive. Oh and not only is Pelosi not a socialist, its completely impossible for her - or anybody else - to be a fascist socialist. It makes no sense.

Main Entry: fas·cism
1often capitalized : a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition

Main Entry: so·cial·ism
1: any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods

Ray, surely you understand that socialism can easily lead to fascism in only a generation or two... an individual doesn't necessarily need to be both socialist and fascist at the same time for there to be a political evolution from socialist to fascist.

But come on, you know there are many many subdivisions of each of these political philosophies that muddy the water... outta room...

Giancarlo at 8:03pm February 14
Dear Sir,
If that's the best definition you may provide, I truly hope you never went to college and if you did my best guess is that you never took a course in social or political theory. If you did, you should ask for a refund from your college prof!
I bid you peace

Joshua at 9:07pm February 14
You bid me peace after insulting me? Sorry I can't appease your snotty ass attitude. I'll leave it to you idiots to negotiate with those who aim to take away your free agency... while I develop my survival skills. Schmuck.

There I go again... angry white guy who is apparently a total idiot...

Ever find yourself wondering why you engage yourself in this sometimes?

I suspect despite the the accusations of those on the left, you will continue to keep up the good fight to share what is right. Seems to me that is your nature.

Actually, this relates to one of the big reasons I like Obama. (Bear with me.) There is often so much emotion when we talk about politics, and it is often just too tempting to get in a personal dig. (I'm as guilty as anyone, I laughed out loud at the Hannity comment.) But really, where does that kind of anger and resentment get us? Obama seems to me to be trying to rise about the pure partisan politics of the past 16 years, talking with people and trying to be, I don't know, more conciliatory. There will always be room for dissent and disagreement with specific policies, in fact I'm not sold on socialized medicine any more than you are. (Well, maybe a little bit more than YOU, but probably not by much. heh) But it is hard to have a rational discussion about it when there is still so much anger and bitterness. A lot of people on the left are very angry about the way they've been treated over the last 8 years, and want some relief. Probably some want a little revenge. But Obama is not going there, he is really setting the tone and telling the left to chill out, get over their feelings and come sit at the table to work. He is saying the same thing to the right, but it will take longer for the right to trust him.

I also think there must be a very interesting book out there somewhere that talks about how much more we pay attention to the details when the opposite party is in power. To me, Republicans just now remembering that they are ideologically fiscal conservatives is hypocritical and rather transparent as far as motive, but as much as I'd love to blame it all on politics, I think it is also a bit of human nature. I don't know a thing about the Hoyas, but since I work at Georgetown University Hospital, I feel some kind of ownership of them. (I mean, what the hell is a Hoya anyway?)

Ultimate lesson - perhaps Facebook status updates aren't the best place to discuss complex political theory. lol

Cathy: Thanks, You know exactly how I feel eh? Sometimes I wonder if I'm just nuts...

Robb: Awesome points, especially discussing complex political theory over a facebook status update! No Joke! I don't know what gets into me sometimes, I just get passionate about things.

But I don't know if anyone noticed- at least the way I see it- was I was trying to actually get somewhere with the point I was making but instead the responses are insulting. I can't be surprised for I'm sure I do the same thing reciprocally.

I've encountered Giancarlo's attitude so often on college campuses that, in my opinion, are high flatulent and snotty with zero practical experience in what they are touting... for they've never ventured out of their campuses walls... they've never tried to start their own business, they've never served in the Military, they usually have no kids, so their life experience is all from the printed word that someone else (most likely with the same lack of life experience) eloquently wrote. I could be way off, but that's how I'm seeing it.

Robb, I know you personally so I have the advantage of knowing your amazing background and diversified experiences produced from your extensive travels. This is a perspective that I can only imagine therefore I greatly respect your opinion and appreciate your thoughts.

I'm also way looking forward to going into the lion's den of Hoya-ville to visit with ya in a couple of months. I believe a Hoya is a bull dog of some sort or something? I'll be sure to don some of my 'Cuse gear... if I can find any...

I looked it up finally. Hoya is a made-up word. The mascot is a bulldog, but the origin of the word Hoya is a bit vague, a tradition that has been passed down through the years. Totally weird. But still less embarrassing than when I was at the University of California at Irvine, whose mascot, seriously, is the anteater. At least I got to be a wolf at UNM, which is a bit more manly.

Fellow Lobo here, gotta love that mascot in light of a particular in-law's last name!

You really need to send those people a Facebook virus or something. These are the folks who sign for a mortgage without reading the terms and see nothing wrong with that. Dolts.
